First Lady Michelle Obama Attends "Cinco de Mayo" Celebration at LAMB

The Latin American Montessori Bilingual Public Charter School (LAMB) hosted First Lady Michelle Obama for a "Cinco de Mayo" celebration. During the celebration, students from LAMB and the Next Step Public Charter School performed several dances and a song entitled, "Somos los Niños de LAMB".

"This is truly a memorable day. We are here in the historic Military Road School, one of the first schools in the District for freedmen, and you are the first, First Lady to visit LAMB. . . . By commemorating this day together, we embody the hopes of the past, and dreams for the future including a free first-class public education", said Diane Cottman, Executive Director of LAMB.
The celebration took place at the historic Military Road School building that LAMB purchased and renovated. LAMB seeks to foster bilingualism in a self-directed learning environment in which children build a foundation of knowledge essential for a lifetime of learning.

During her visit, the First Lady addressed a large group of students and staff from LAMB, the Next Step, and the Latin American Youth Center. She remarked, "I encourage all of you to consider getting involved in public service and give back to your communities. You are our future, from the 3 year olds to the 23 year olds, and we are counting on you to work hard at school so you that you may become our next generation of leaders, and may be standing up here where I am one day".
